Having gained acclaim at the Paris Salon of 1891, this piece depicts a Titan who has picked up a stone and is about to throw it. The posture conveys movement and force, with tension building through the action. The Greek Titans were powerful early gods who fought a great war, known as the Titanomachy, against the Olympian gods and were said to have hurled stones as weapons. |
