The Fall of the Titans
Oil on canvas, 2.5 m. x 3 m., by Cornelis van Haarlem, 1588–90
Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen

A monumental work depicting nude male figures in chaotic descent, dramatising the mythic defeat of the Titans by Zeus. The composition’s exaggerated musculature and dynamic foreshortening demonstrate Van Haarlem’s command of anatomical distortion and depth, with oversized butterflies and insects conjuring an imagined infernal fauna. The exclusion of female figures, despite mythological precedent, suggests a deliberate departure from classical balance, favouring grotesque dynamism over narrative clarity. The style blends Northern Mannerism with a bold, almost surreal interpretation of classical mythology, intensifying the emotional impact of the scene through heightened and theatrical forms and dramatic movement.
