Graff depicted this ibis in
profile, a format typical of scientific illustration in her era. The
bird’s plumage appears richly textured through subtle shifts of tone
and varied brushwork, giving weight and presence to the form. She
created the image while living in Suriname, where she spent two
years with her mother documenting the region’s plants and animals. A
later inscription, however, mistakenly identifies the subject as a
flamingo. |
