Santa Marta Sabrewing Hummingbird
Hand-coloured lithograph, by John Gould (1804–1881)

Campylopterus phainopeplus, with the males showing bright green upperparts, a dark face, and a deep blue throat and breast, along with a small white mark behind the eye. The tail appears dark with a bluish tone. The female, shown at the top, is less vivid, greener above and greyish below, and usually has a slightly more curved bill. Gould sets the birds among arching leaves and a flowering stem, using the curve of the plant to frame their poses and bring out contrasts within the plumage across the figures.
