| Pierre Gobert (1662–1744) | ||||||||||
| Gobert, a French portrait painter from an artistic family, was born in Fontainebleau. Little is known about his early years, aside from the fact that he was the son of a sculptor. By 1682, he had begun working as a court painter. He became an academician in 1701. In 1704, he exhibited around seventeen portraits of members of the royal family at the Salon, but did not exhibit again until 1734. He was favoured by Marie Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, the mother of Louis XV, for whom he painted numerous portraits. Between 1707 and 1709, Gobert worked in Lunéville, creating portraits of Leopold, Duke of Lorraine, and his family. In 1725, he was elected councillor of the Académie Royale. After the Salon of 1735, there are no further records of his activity. He died in Paris. | ||||||||||
