Paradise
Tempera and gold on canvas, transferred from wood, by Giovanni di Paolo, 1445
The Metropolitan Museum, New York

Angels and saints come together in a garden of Paradise. Alongside a panel showing the Creation and Expulsion from Paradise, this painting formed the predella of an altarpiece once in San Domenico, Siena. Completed in 1445, the two works are among Giovanni di Paolo’s finest. Though influenced by Fra Angelico’s paintings in Florence, Giovanni favoured a dreamlike intensity over the measured structure typical of Florentine art.
