Georges Gardet (1863–1939)

Considered one of the greatest sculptors and animaliers of his time, Gardet was born in Paris. His father, also a sculptor, provided his first training, after which he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Aimé Millet and Emmanuel Frémiet. His talent quickly became evident, surpassing that of many of his contemporaries. As a sculptor, he remained conservative and traditional, yet his animal sculptures were powerful, full of vitality, and imbued with a romantic quality, each displaying a distinct character. His works demonstrate exceptional technical skill and attention to detail, and he was regarded as a successor to Bayre and Mené, although he did not adopt more contemporary styles. Gardet worked in bronze, marble, and onyx, and many of his pieces were also produced in unglazed porcelain by Sèvres. He died in Paris.
