| Luigi Gandolfi (1810–1869) | ||||||||||
| A painter and lithographer, Gandolfi was born in Turin and studied under Giovanni Battista Biscarra at the Turin Academy. He was later appointed court painter to King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, and subsequently to the King of Italy. Between 1866 and 1869, he served as director of the Galleria Sabauda. Gandolfi excelled in miniature portraits and was particularly noted for his skilful use of colour, creating the delicate rosy tones of the skin in his subjects. He died in his native city of Turin. | ||||||||||
