Portrait of Bianca degli
Utili Maselli and Her Children Oil on canvas, 99 x 135.2 cm, by Lavinia Fontana, c. 1604/1605 Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco |
||||||||||
| Bianca, a Roman noblewoman, gave birth to nineteen children during her lifetime. These are the six who survived. The family is adorned in magnificent attire of extraordinary richness, most of the children holding symbolic objects, as Bianca holds a small dog. These carefully chosen props convey allegorical significance related to the moral qualities of each individual portrayed. |
