Jacob Folkema (1692–1767)

A Dutch designer and engraver, Folkema was born in Dokkum, Friesland. He received his first instruction from his father, Johann Jakob Folkema, a goldsmith, and later studied under the French engraver Bernard Picart in Amsterdam. During this period, he contributed to Royaumont's Bible of 1712 and Ruysch's Anatomy of 1737. He specialised in book illustrations and portraits, producing numerous plates after other artists, such as Picart, as well as from his own compositions. His work primarily consists of small portraits and vignettes for books. Folkema was also highly skilled in mezzotint engraving. He died in Dokkum.
