Enrico Fanfani (1824–1885)

Fanfani was born in Florence and studied there with the support of a stipend granted by Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts from 1836 to 1854. An exponent of Italian historical Romanticism, he made his debut at the Academy of Florence in 1845 with his painting The Death of Zerbino and continued to exhibit works depicting historical, Biblical, literary, and Orientalist subjects at the Academy and other venues. His historical paintings often portrayed scenes from Italian history, chivalric tales, and literary works, reflecting the Romantic fascination with drama and heroism. His engagement with Biblical and Orientalist themes aligned with the broader European interest in religious narratives and exoticism during the 19th century. Fanfani’s career coincided with a period in which the Italian academies emphasised historical painting as the pinnacle of artistic achievement, reinforcing his focus on narrative and large-scale works. He died in Florence.
