Fabergé turned to the native
riches of Russia’s Ural Mountains, favouring hardstones for many of
his creations. Each material carried its own character in surface
and hue, and under his exacting eye those qualities were heightened
rather than concealed. In the hands of his craftsmen, stone seemed
almost to take on life, as seen in this delicate figure of a begging
poodle shaped from milky agate. |
