Winter Landscape
Colour woodblock print on paper, 25.4 x 38.1 cm, by Keisai Eisen (1790–1848)
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

A serene winter village with a torii gate, nestled among snow-laden trees, sits quietly along the banks of a tranquil body of water, with traditional thatched-roof buildings partially obscured by the heavy blanket of snow covering their roofs and the surrounding landscape. In the foreground, a solitary figure poles a long, narrow boat across the calm blue-green waters, creating gentle ripples that disturb the otherwise peaceful surface. The entire scene, in tones of blue and white, deepens the chill of the scene, with the snow-covered foliage forming organic, cloud-like shapes that give the landscape a dreamlike, muffled quality typical of a quiet winter day.
