View of the Forum in
Rome Oil on canvas, 32 x 41 cm, by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, 1814 The National Gallery, London |

The Roman Forum appears with
sharp clarity, its ruins ordered with a measured sense of structure
and enlivened by figures of daily routine set against the fading
majesty of Rome. Painted by Eckersberg during his three years in
Italy, the scene draws the eye towards the Palazzo Senatorio on the
Capitol, with the various monumental architectural features all
shown before excavation had revealed the Forum in full. |
