Nicolas Dupin (1753–c. 1791)

Son of the French engraver Pierre Dupin, Nicolas Dupin was an accomplished printmaker and engraver, primarily recognised for his depictions of costumes and fashion. He was active between 1776 and 1787, a period when fashion prints became increasingly popular in Paris. His most significant contribution was his extensive collaboration with the Galerie des Modes, a fashion publication produced by Esnauts et Rapilly between 1778 and 1787. This series, which featured detailed engravings of contemporary French fashions, was distributed widely across Paris and was instrumental in spreading the latest trends of the day. Dupin supplied numerous plates for the series, many of which depicted aristocratic and bourgeois clothing, from intricate court dresses to more casual attire. His engravings were known for their clarity, accuracy, and fine attention to detail, reflecting both the luxury and the social changes of late 18th-century French society.
