Still Life with Cheese Oil on panel, 82.5 x 111.4 cm, by Floris Claesz. van Dijck, c. 1615 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |

A lavish table arranged with towering wheels of cracked, golden cheese stacked at the centre, surrounded by bowls of apples and grapes, bread, olives, scattered nuts, peeled fruit, and half-filled glasses, all set on a patterned damask cloth, alongside a pewter jug and ceramic dishes. A reflective plate projects over the table’s edge, as if it might slip and fall at any moment, heightening the illusion of reality and risk, a device often used by van Dijck in still life to make the arrangement feel immediate and alive. |
