Antoine Dieu (1662–1727)

A French painter and draughtsman, Antoine was born in Paris and was the son of Edouard Dieu, an engraver. Educated at the Académie de Saint-Luc in Paris, he was instructed by Charles Le Brun and painted historical subjects and portraits in the style of his master, not without merit. In 1686, he won the Prix de Rome with his Entrée de Noé. At the time, he favoured Biblical themes but later began to explore other subjects. In 1708, he became a senior official of the painters' guild, having used his status as a student of the Academy to gain entry, and was appointed painter-ordinary to the king in 1714. His more notable works during this period were The Birth of the Duke of Burgundy before the King and The Marriage of the Duke of Burgundy, both of which are at Versailles. However, his best work is the portrait of Louis XIV on his throne, which was engraved by Nicolas Arnoult. Antoine also enjoyed certain trading privileges through royal grants, and many of his works bear motifs from the field of commerce. He became a member of the Paris Academy in 1722, a professor in 1724, and entered the Competition of 1727, but died two months before the prize was awarded, in Paris.
