Johan van Diest (1695–1757)

Very little is known of Van Diest, who came from a Dutch family of painters originally from The Hague. The son of the notable painter of landscapes and marine scenes, Adriaen van Diest, he was born in England. He likely trained under Sir Godfrey Kneller, the leading portraitist of the English court, which may have shaped his approach to portraiture and copy work. His artistic output between 1718 and 1736 encompassed a range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, and harbour views, though the quality of his work varied and did not consistently attract critical acclaim. Many of Van Diest’s pieces were later engraved, suggesting a degree of circulation and appreciation, particularly among collectors of reproductive prints. He died in London, leaving behind a modest but diverse portfolio.
