Jacob Willemszen Delff (I) (c. 1550–1601)

Jacob Willemsz Delff the Elder, often referred to simply as Delff (or Delft), was a prominent portraitist and draftsman of the Dutch Renaissance, whose career bridged the late 16th century’s transition into the Dutch Golden Age. Born in Gouda, his relocation to Delft in 1582 marked the beginning of a productive period during which he became known for his solid compositional structure and precise draftsmanship, though his colour choices were often criticised for their heaviness. His legacy extended beyond his own work: he fathered three sons—Cornelis, Willem, and Rochus—who each pursued painting, with Cornelis gaining particular recognition for his still lifes. Delff also played a formative role in the artistic development of Pieter Cornelisz van Rijck, underscoring his influence as a teacher within the Delft artistic community. His work and descendants contributed to the city's emergence as a vital centre of Dutch art in the decades that followed.
