Marmaduke Cradock (c. 1660–1717)

Cradock, sometimes incorrectly referred to as Luke Cradock, was an English painter born in Somerton near Ilchester in Somerset who later moved to London. He trained initially as an apprentice house painter before developing into a self-taught painter of animals, birds, game, and still life. He worked largely for dealers and did not achieve significant recognition during his lifetime. His work shows careful observation of birds and animals, produced without formal instruction, though he received little financial reward for it. After his death, Craddock's paintings gained greater appreciation and rose in value. Between 1740 and 1743, Josephus Sympson engraved and published several of his more lively bird compositions. He died in London.
