| Found in Olbia, Ukraine, an important trading port for both the Phoenicians and the Greeks, this curious Phoenician bead of opaque glass depicts a male head with a flowing beard. The face features stark white eyes with deep blue irises, a broad nose, defined hair with strands curving around the head, and an extended beard that terminates in a rounded base. The stylised portrayal, with exaggerated features, suggests a deliberate departure from naturalistic representation. The piece was likely part of a larger decorative or functional item, perhaps a piece of jewellery or an amulet. Phoenician artisans were highly skilled in glassmaking, a craft that was greatly valued across the Mediterranean in antiquity. |
