Mask bead
Opaque glass, 1.8 cm, anonymous (Phoenician), 5th–4th century BC
J.P. Getty Museum

Found in Olbia, Ukraine, an important trading port for both the Phoenicians and the Greeks, this curious Phoenician bead of opaque glass depicts a male head with a flowing beard. The face features stark white eyes with deep blue irises, a broad nose, defined hair with strands curving around the head, and an extended beard that terminates in a rounded base. The stylised portrayal, with exaggerated features, suggests a deliberate departure from naturalistic representation. The piece was likely part of a larger decorative or functional item, perhaps a piece of jewellery or an amulet. Phoenician artisans were highly skilled in glassmaking, a craft that was greatly valued across the Mediterranean in antiquity.
