Maria Giovanna Clementi (c. 1692–1761)

Known as 'La Clementina,' Maria Giovanna Clementi, née Bussano, was an Italian painter and draughtswoman, likely born in Turin. She trained exclusively in portraiture under the court painter Giovanni Battista Curlando and became acquainted with the works of Swedish portraitist Martin van Meytens the Younger, who was in Turin in 1728, as well as the French painters represented in the Turin gallery. Her style was influenced by Nicolas de Largillière and Hyacinthe Rigaud. Clementi was commissioned to paint portraits of members of the Savoy family, which were presented to other European royal households. Clementi died in Turin.
