Giovanni Carboncino (c. 1638–after 1703)

Carboncino was born in either Treviso or Venice and was active mainly in Venice between about 1672 and 1692. Little is known of his life, though he is thought to have apprenticed with the Dalmatian painter Matteo Ponzone and studied under Sante Peranda. His style followed the tradition of Veronese, Titian, and Bassano, as well as the ‘neo-Veronese’ manner of contemporaries such as Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, while also showing Roman influence in its softened palette and grazing light, likely the result of a youthful visit to Rome. He produced numerous religious works for Venetian churches and portraits that were highly esteemed, though only a few of his paintings survive. Between 1687 and 1692 Carboncino was a member of the Venetian painters’ guild. He died in Venice.
