Antoine Callet (1741–1823)

The French historical painter Antoine-François Callet was born in Paris. He won the Prix de Rome in 1764 with his painting Cleobis and Biton Conducting the Chariot of their Mother to the Temple of Juno. In 1780 he was admitted to the Académie Royale, for which occasion he decorated part of the ceiling in the Gallery of Apollo at the Louvre with a depiction of Spring. Over the course of nearly forty years, he exhibited works that ranged from depictions of contemporary historical events to mythological and allegorical themes. He also painted the ceiling of the Spinola Palace in Genoa, creating the Apotheosis of Ambrogio Spinola. Callet was associated with the school of French painting led by Joseph-Marie Vien, which broke away from the excesses of François Boucher and prepared the ground for the neoclassicism of Jacques-Louis David. He died in Paris.
