Jörg Breu the Elder (c. 1475–1537)

Of the Danube School, Breu flourished in Augsburg from about 1512 to 1530. He was a painter and draughtsman on wood, whose style was influenced by Hans Burgkmair—probably his teacher—and also by Albrecht Altdorfer. He visited Austria from 1500 to 1502, creating three complex, multi-panel altarpieces that reveal a unique interest in nature and the landscape as the prime subject. A very successful artist—Breu ran one of the two largest workshops in Augsburg, which he had established in 1502—the anatomical treatment of his figures is considered somewhat defective, but his landscape backgrounds are remarkable. Italian elements, such as ornamentation and chiaroscuro effects, later appeared in his works. A versatile artist, he worked on history paintings, frescoes, woodcuts, and stained glass, and continued painting altarpieces in the 1520s despite the Reformation. Breu died in Augsburg, and his son took over his workshop there.
