A Cricket Match, with Canford Manor beyond
Oil on canvas, 49 x 74 cm, by Thomas Bremond, 1855
Private collection

A cricket match takes place on a wide, lush lawn in front of the grand Gothic-style country house, Canford Manor. The players, dressed in light trousers, braces, and brimmed hats, are captured mid-game, their poses suggesting concentration and motion. The bowler is mid-delivery, the batsman poised, while fielders stand ready in their positions. On either side of the scene, white tents are pitched, with spectators in fine dress seated on a bench, others at a table, and a few strolling by, making this as much a genteel social gathering as a sporting event. Dogs frolic on the lawn. The carefully rendered trees frame the view, adding depth and balance. The overall composition combines sporting action with architectural grandeur and the leisurely pace of a summer afternoon.
