Breitner’s Girl in a
Kimono series includes at least five paintings in which a young
girl rests on a divan. These works stand apart from his usual focus
on Amsterdam’s busy streets and urban scenes. In 1893, Geesje Kwak,
the daughter of a bargeman, became his regular model. He portrayed
her in kimonos of red, blue, and white through drawings, paintings,
and photographs. The series was not well received at the time but is
now recognised as a central achievement of Dutch Japonisme. |
