Robert Bonnart (1652–1733)

A French painter, engraver, draughtsman, and publisher, Robert was born in Paris. He was the godson of Robert Nanteuil and a pupil of François van der Meulen, after whom he engraved several plates. Initially active in Orléans and later in Paris, he was appointed painter and engraver to the king and subsequently became assistant professor at the Academy of St Luke. His work focused mainly on portraits, allegorical and religious scenes, and, together with his three brothers, he was known for depictions of fashion and costume. Robert died in Paris. Bonnart is often confused with his son, Robert-François Bonnart. He died in his native city of Paris.
