| Johan Bes (1822–1887) | ||||||||||
| Bes, also known as Johann Böss, was a painter active in Serbia and Austria who specialised in portraiture. He studied painting at the Academy of Vienna from 1839 to 1843, where he became acquainted with the Serbian artist Anastas Jovanović. Bes later worked as an associate in Jovanović’s Vienna workshop. He then moved to Serbia, where he established himself as a portraitist, completing numerous commissions for prominent figures, including members of the Obrenović, Karađorđević, and Jovanović families. His style combined academic precision with a sensitivity to character, capturing both the appearance and personality of his sitters. Many of his works have since been lost. In 1861, he was appointed a member of the Vienna Academy of Arts. Bes died in Vienna. | ||||||||||
