Luigi Bernero (1775–1842?)

Luigi Bernero, son of the painter and sculptor Giovanni Battista Bernero and brother of the sculptor Vittorio Amedeo, was himself both a painter and sculptor. Born in Turin, he likely began learning portrait painting from his father, who excelled in the genre, and may also have studied under Laurent Pécheux alongside his brother. Luigi focused primarily on painting, winning the first prize for design at the Accademia in 1793. In 1794 he was admitted to the guild of the Compagnia di San Luca in Turin, and in 1797 he and his brother became its directors. In 1823 he was appointed official court painter in Turin and produced a number of portraits of the royal family. He was also the teacher and brother-in-law of the painter Antonio Raffaele Calliano. Luigi Bernero died in Turin in either 1842 or 1848.
