| Gijsbertus Johannes van den Berg (1769–1817) | ||||||||||
| Van den Berg was a Dutch painter, copyist, watercolourist, and draftsman, active in Rotterdam and known for his miniature paintings, though little is known about his life. He trained under de Prey, developing exceptional drawing skills, and practised in Rotterdam before spending three years in Antwerp, where his talent and dedication earned high praise. He then spent over three years in Mannheim and Düsseldorf, studying works in the electoral galleries and producing copies of van Dyck and other masters, earning a gold medal for his efforts. Plans to travel to Italy were abandoned, and Van den Berg returned to Rotterdam in 1790, becoming a successful painter of miniature portraits and watercolours. He also taught, and his miniature portraits were admired for their accurate likenesses and precise execution. | ||||||||||
