Carved shell of a
maritime scene Engraved oyster shell, 9 x 8.4 cm, by Cornelis Bellekin, c. 1700 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |

| One of a pair of pearl oyster shells, carved in relief with mythological maritime figures, the scene lies beside a rocky outcrop dotted with vegetation, its etched and darkened surfaces echoing the movement of the waves. To the right, a woman sits upon a fish, with a man at her side and another woman just behind; to the left, two children are shown—one perched upon a fish, the other nearby—while a boy sounds a horn in the background. Above, two winged putti drift through the air, and Bellekin’s name is inscribed on a small plank floating on the water. |
