Seated Bear
Bronze, 13.97 × 20.32 × 14.61 cm, by Antoine-Louis Barye, cast by 1873 from an 1833 model
National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC

In a moment of quiet playfulness, a bear reclines in a naturalistic pose on its back, propping itself up on one elbow, with one hind leg stretched out and the other bent neatly at the knee, leaning forward to grasp its raised foot with a forepaw.  Barye often sought to reveal the inner life of animals, not merely their physical presence, and here he captures a fleeting, intimate moment that hints at curiosity or simple bodily comfort—playful, perhaps, but without overt animation.
