Antoine-Louis Barye’s four
allegorical sculptures—War, Peace, Force, and Order—were
commissioned in 1854–1855 by the French state for the Cour du
Carrousel of the Louvre Palace during its expansion under Napoleon
III. The stone sculptures were installed on the façades of the
Pavillon Denon and Pavillon Richelieu. Bronze reproductions,
purchased by William Walters in 1885, sit in Mount Vernon Place,
Baltimore.
