| Faustino Anderloni (1766–1847) | ||||||||||
| An accomplished burin engraver, Anderloni was born in Sant'Eufemia, near Brescia. He received instruction from two relatively unknown artists—Carloni and Benezzi. He later went to Pavia to assist Professor Scarpa in illustrating his major scientific work on the anatomy of the eye. In 1795, he moved to Milan, but by 1801, he had been appointed professor of drawing at the University of Pavia. Anderloni engraved illustrations for several scientific works, as well as portraits of the celebrated Herder, Alfieri, Boerhaave, and Schiller. Later in his career, he created a small but charming engraving of The Magdalene Sleeping in the Wilderness, after Correggio; The Repose in Egypt, after Nicolas Poussin; a Mater Amabilis, after Sassoferrato; and, in collaboration with Giovita Garavaglia, The Ascension of the Virgin, after Guido Reni’s painting in the Church of Sant'Ambrogio in Genoa. He was the brother of the painter and engraver Pietro Anderloni. Faustino died in Pavia. | ||||||||||
