Bishop Chess Piece
Composite clay, approx. 8.7 x 3cm, 20th century
Private collection

The bishop from a Victorian-style chess set, inspired by the classic artwork and court card designs found on nineteenth-century English playing cards. He wears a tall mitre and has a face with a heavy, strained expression, with downturned features and a slightly furrowed look that gives him a stern, weary, or contemplative air; the carved lines around the partially closed eyes and mouth create a sense of gravity, while the long, draped robes fall in narrow vertical folds to a decorated circular base.
