Le monde Tarot card
Woodcut print after a c. 1500 original, by M. E. Coppin, before 1859

The World card, number twenty-one in the Major Arcana, is the final card in the traditional tarot deck. It represents the completion of a significant journey, where past experiences come together as a unified whole, while also signalling readiness to begin a new phase with the insight gained along the way. Traditional imagery shows a naked woman dancing within a wreath, symbolising life’s cycles and renewal. Some versions include figures surrounded by zodiac creatures, evoking balance and universal harmony. Others depict a woman standing or dancing over a sphere containing cities, or on a globe, symbolising mastery and harmony with the world. A notable variation, as seen here in a tarot deck made in Paris, presents a naked woman holding a sail or banner—possibly suggesting movement and the journey ahead—implying that completion carries the promise of new beginnings propelled by unseen forces.
