| Victorian Playing Cards | ||||||||||
| A collection of 19th-century playing cards from various decks, featuring a mix of traditional and highly decorative designs, many with hand-drawn illustrations that creatively incorporate suit symbols. The set consists of 16 cards, each measuring 9.2 x 6.5 cm, printed and coloured with pen and ink. Several cards depict anthropomorphic characters—such as jesters, aristocrats, and soldiers—whose clothing or accessories integrate hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades. Others feature floral motifs or symmetrical geometric patterns on their backs. Notably, one card from a British Museum sample sheet dated 1867 provides a fine example of period design. The collection reflects the Victorian fascination with intricate ornamentation and playful reinterpretations of traditional card elements. | ||||||||||
