| The merry-go-round, also known as a carrousel (from French, referring to a mounted tournament), developed from 17th-century French equestrian displays under Louis XIV that included ring-piercing exercises. Mechanical devices with wooden horses were later used for practice and amusement, and by the late 19th century the English engineer Frederick Savage had developed them into the modern form. |
