| This chess set by Von Königsberg, a German soldier stationed in the Netherlands, glorifies the drive for conquest of Nazi Germany. It was on display in 1941 at the Kunst der Front exhibition, organised by the German occupiers at the Rijksmuseum. The pieces take military form: the pawns are infantrymen; on the white side, the rook is a Flak (Flugabwehrkanone – anti-aircraft gun); the knight is a motorcyclist; the bishop is a fighter aircraft (Junkers Ju 87, the so-called Stuka, Sturzkampfflugzeug); and the king and queen are aerial bombs. On the brown side, the knight is a rider; the bishop is a fighter aircraft (not a Stuka); and the king is a tank. On the border of the chessboard is the inscription '1939 SCHACH-MATT POLEN . DENMARK . NORWAY . HOLLAND . BELGIUM . FRANCE . ENGLAND USW'. |
