Bishop Chess Piece
Walrus ivory, 9.6 x 6.3 x 3.6 cm, Scandinavian (Norway?), 1150–1200

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Chess in Europe introduced the bishop in the 12th century, replacing the elephant of Islamic tradition, a change that reflected the mediaeval reality that bishops often accompanied armies. The smaller figures on this figure probably represent ceremonial attendants, including a tonsured Reader holding the Bishop’s book and possibly a Precentor holding a staff and cupping his ear..
