| Chess in Europe introduced the bishop in the 12th century, replacing the elephant of Islamic tradition, a change that reflected the mediaeval reality that bishops often accompanied armies. The smaller figures on this figure probably represent ceremonial attendants, including a tonsured Reader holding the Bishop’s book and possibly a Precentor holding a staff and cupping his ear.. |
