Saint Francis of Assisi Polychromed wood, anonymous, 18th century Museo Nacional del Virreinato, Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico |
||||||||||
| In his friar's habit, Saint Francis stands, holding a skull to his chest, a poignant memento mori symbolising mortality and spiritual vigilance. The statue is from Tepotzotlán’s Jesuit college and church complex of San Francisco Javier, founded in the late 16th century and flourishing in the 18th century, when Baroque religious art in New Spain reached its height. |
