Discus thrower
Bronze, 180 x 107.5 x 51 cm, by Mathieu Kessels, 1828, cast c. 1900
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

The figure stands in the nude, legs apart, holding a discus with both hands extended forward. This bronze is cast from a plaster model based on Kessels' 1828 marble sculpture, originally commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire. The marble now resides at Chatsworth House in England, while the plaster model, preserved in Brussels, was used for this casting.
