Matterhorn at sunset

Rising sharply on the border between Switzerland and Italy, the Matterhorn stands at 4,478 metres and is composed largely of gneiss, with its distinctive shape formed by erosion along four steep ridges. Its north face remains largely in permanent shade, which contributes to persistent ice and makes it one of the coldest and most technically demanding faces in the Alps.
