View of Krakatoa during the Earlier Stage of the Eruption
Colour lithograph by Parker & Coward, 1888

From a photograph taken on 27 May 1883. The later eruption of Krakatoa, located on an island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, occurred in August 1883 and was one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in recorded history, producing enormous explosions, vast ash clouds, and tsunamis that killed more than 36,000 people. The sound of the eruption was heard thousands of kilometres away, while ash and atmospheric shockwaves spread around the globe and altered sunsets and temperatures for months afterwards..
