| One of the few women to take part in early European aeronautics, Madame Bittorf made her ascent in Augsburg on the morning of 5 July. The balloon, decorated in blue-and-white chequering, is topped with a matching pennant and carries a small basket adorned with red flowers. She stands upright within the basket holding two small flags, while a shallow bowl of fruit or flowers rests on the rigging above her head. The careful symmetry, decorative excess, and emblematic gestures suggest a ceremonial display staged for public viewing rather than a functional or experimental flight. |
