Design of a hot air balloon for the coronation of Napoleon
Watercolour, anonymous, 1804
Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris

A proposed ceremonial balloon designed for Napoleon’s coronation in 1804 features intertwined wreaths celebrating his military victories. Two men wave flags atop a golden imperial eagle suspended from the rigging, and a golden angel flies below, blowing a trumpet as a herald of victory, proclaiming Napoleon’s fame and announcing his imperial glory and divine sanction of his reign to the world.
