Photograph by Andrew Ridley, 2017

A diverse collection of wild mushrooms from Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, including species from the Boletus, Cantharellus, Panaeolus, Cortinarius, and Russula genera, amongst others, highlighting the rich fungal diversity of the region. Mushrooms are found in a variety of natural habitats, ranging from dense woodlands and moss-covered forest floors to open grasslands and damp meadows. With their distinct shapes, vibrant colours, and intricate textures, these fungi play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and display the remarkable biodiversity of the fungal kingdom. Some species form essential symbiotic relationships with plants, aiding in nutrient exchange, while others contribute to the decomposition of organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. Additionally, many mushrooms exhibit unique chemical properties that continue to intrigue scientists, foragers, and culinary enthusiasts alike.
