Harlequin with pug Hard-paste porcelain, height 17.8 cm, Meissen Manufactory, c. 1740 The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York |

A harlequin with a lively
pug tucked under his arm, the dog’s open mouth and stiff pose
mimicking the crank-box motion of a hurdy-gurdy. The piece draws on
the period’s German taste for broad, eccentric humour, recasting the
familiar street musician as a playful oddity by swapping the
hurdy-gurdy for a yapping stand-in. |
