The Screen of Ferdinand
VII consists of eight oil-painted panels with oval medallions,
integrating characters from Greek mythology, the reigning Spanish
families—the Bourbons and the Habsburgs—and allegorical figures of
K'iche' and Kaqchikel, two distinct Maya peoples indigenous to
Guatemala, holding necklaces inscribed with
ancestral chiefs' names. The medallions are based on engravings
created to commemorate Guatemala’s 1808 oath of allegiance to
Ferdinand VII of Bourbon, which included designs inspired by Michel
de Marolles' 1655 series for the Greek myths and original engravings
by Guatemalan artist José Casildo España, depicting muses
representing the monarchies that had ruled Guatemala according to
