The f
olding screen of Ferdinand VII
Wood, linen, gold, oil paint, and pigments, anonymous, 19th century
Museo Nacional de Arte de Guatemala,  Antigua Guatemala

The Screen of Ferdinand VII consists of eight oil-painted panels with oval medallions, integrating characters from Greek mythology, the reigning Spanish families—the Bourbons and the Habsburgs—and allegorical figures of K'iche' and Kaqchikel, two distinct Maya peoples indigenous to Guatemala, holding necklaces inscribed with ancestral chiefs' names. The medallions are based on engravings created to commemorate Guatemala’s 1808 oath of allegiance to Ferdinand VII of Bourbon, which included designs inspired by Michel de Marolles' 1655 series for the Greek myths and original engravings by Guatemalan artist José Casildo España, depicting muses representing the monarchies that had ruled Guatemala according to contemporary thought. The screen is shown before its restoration. To view it in its restored state, visit MUNAG.
